Orientation August 19-25

Hello students and welcome to Counseling 120, College and Career Success! Take a look at my video introduction above. Please introduce yourself by telling us about your interests, hobbies and what is important in your life and maybe share a photo or video of yourself as one of your postings this week. As your second posting, tell us about your educational journey, why you are taking this class and your goals and dreams for the future.  Include comments about other students' postings.

This class is especially useful for those of you who want to understand yourself better and choose a major and career that matches your gifts and talents. The class also meets a general education requirement for transfer to state universities. If this is your first class in college, you are off to a good start. If you are a continuing student, there are some great benefits. You will become familiar with some new learning tools that will make your future education easier.

Since the course is online, you can do the work anytime or any place during the week. For best results, be sure to set aside time for working on this class each week and not wait until the last minute to do the work. I look forward to working with all of you this semester.

Marsha Fralick’s Introduction
Here is an example of a 100 word introduction:

I am your professor for Counseling 120. I retired from Cuyamaca College where I worked from 1978-2007 as a counselor and instructor for this course. I play many roles in life. I am a Grandmother with 2 young granddaughters. I enjoy taking care of them frequently and watching them grow. My own children are grown up and have their own careers and homes. I have my own business and work with colleges across the country in training faculty to teach college success courses. In my leisure time I enjoy traveling and being active.  I traveled to the Greek islands, Turkey, Italy and Hawaii over the summer. It was great!
Marsha Fralick’s Educational Journey

Here is an example of a 100 word posting.
I attended a small country high school in New Mexico and was a good student. When I went to the University of New Mexico, I found that it was a whole new world and I was not prepared for it. I struggled to be successful in college and had to learn how to listen to lectures, take notes and prepare for exams. I also had uncertain career goals. When I started working at a college, I remembered those years that I struggled and decided to invent a course that would help students to be successful. It has been a fun and rewarding adventure for the last 33 years.

Thank you for your post. It is incredible that you have been to Japan. How was your experience in Japan? Welcome to the class. Animals are great but they are definitely a lot of work. I have a min pin and he comes everywhere for me.

  2. I graduated from Serra High School in San Diego and was a great student. I was in NJROTC and choir. I attended Kaplan College for three months and it wasn't my cup of tea, so I transferred to San Diego Mesa Community College to pursue my dream as an veterinarian. I went for Spring 2013 semester and things didn't work out as I planned in the middle I dropped out due to some personal problems. I was planning to attend PIMA Medical Institute and become a Vet that way. Instead, I decided that I would take all my prerequisites which brought me to where I am today at Cuyamaca College and transfer to UCSD and become a Vet that way which is currently my educational goal and life time wish.

  4. I attended Santana High School in Santee for my freshman and part of sophorme years. After that I transfer to the at home program through Julian Charter. I have general always been a good student where getting a "C" in a class was bad. I finished my senior year early and graduated in January of 08. I enrolled at Marinello school of beauty, where I completed 1600 hours. I then had to passed a state board test to receive my cosmetology license. This is my first semester in college and one of my first online classes. Better late than never !!!

I finished the program June 25th and moved back to San Diego one day later (I really missed SD). I completed my externship portion of the program out here at a Family Practice which I completed last Wednesday and here I am less then a week later. I moved to Moreno Valley and lived there for a few years before moving to Menifee. After about a year of living in Menifee my husband an I decided to move to El Cajon to be closer to his job. 10. I graduated from Gordon Kiefer Independent Study School in 2007. In 2008 I attended a semester of college at Riverside Community College but I felt the work load was too heavy because I had a newborn son so I dropped out. In December of 2009 I enrolled at Everest College for the Medical Administration Assistant program. I graduated in 2010 and was hired at my externship site, which was a great cardiology office. I worked both front and back office for 2 years until we moved to El Cajon. 16. I graduated in the class of 2010 from Olympian High School in Chula Vista, CA. Sad to say, I had not been very diligent in my application process to different colleges and universities while I was in high school, so when I graduated, I didn't really know what to do or where to go. I started exploring different community college options and Cuyamaca College really caught my attention. I decided to attend here and transfer to a four-year university. I'm majoring in English with the intention of becoming an author of many books. The reason I am taking this course it was something that really interested me and my counselor highly recommended it. :)

    1. Christian,

It is nice that you gave credit to your counselors for helping you get where you are today. I have had some great role models in my life also. I have always turned to my teachers for help and my high school biology teacher has been a great influence in my life. I also have a high school advocate who I look up to and he has helped me tremendously. I must say that I have had some of the best teachers in my education and I look up to all of them and respect them very much. I also have to give credit to the many coaches I had over the years because they have also been a great help and influenced the person I am today. Good luck this semester and in the future.

  24. My Educational Journey:
I will be entering my senior year at Valhalla High School in September. All the classes I have taken so far at Valhalla will prepare me for college. In addition to the required English and History classes, I have taken Honors Geometry, Honors Algebra II, and Honors Pre-Cal as well Honors Chemistry and AP Biology. Math and Science are my favorite subjects and this year as a senior I will be taking AP Calculus and two science courses, Physiology and Physics. I also am on the football team at Valhalla and play on the O-Line and in the spring I throw the Discus and Shot Put. I am presently taking this class to get ahead and get some college credit. I took the History of Jazz over the summer and did well and enjoyed it so I thought I would take on another class. Since I love the math and sciences I would like to do something in the following fields: Engineering, Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant and/or Forensics (Criminal Justice). My older sister goes to UCSD and I really like the campus there and I believe that is where I would like to end up. I will apply to UCSD this fall as well as other colleges but realize that they are so impacted and it is hard to get into them as a freshman. If I don’t get in then I will go to Cuyamaca/Grossmont for 2-3 years, get all my general education out of the way and then transfer. If I stay at the community college I plan to play football at Grossmont and throw the Discus and Shot Put at Cuyamaca and then when I transfer to UCSD I will throw the Discus/shot put there. My dreams for the future are to be successful and make good money. I want to be able to support myself and family. I can picture myself going into the military after getting my degree and being an officer in one of the branches of the military. These are my goals and dreams and I hope that I will be able to carry them out.

  25. My name is Jennifer Waugh and this is my first year of college. I am the middle child of five children and this can teach someone how to get along with people that can be difficult. I am not your average person, I am completely strange and weird. For example, during high school on a spirit day known as twin day, I dressed up like my eighty year old teacher. He was my best friend, sort of. I work privately taking care of an elderly lady who is paralyzed due to a stroke. I also am a Sunday School Teacher and a Junior High Leader. I enjoy doing puzzles, decorating, and helping those who need help. I am a committed person who is committed to whatever event I am in. I am excited for whatever this class brings.

  26. I graduated from Foothills Christian High School located in El Cajon, California in the Class of 2013. I have gone to that school all the way from kindergarten to 12th grade, since my mother has worked there. Currently, I am attending both Cuyamaca and Grossmont Community colleges. I am taking four classes. In my past some of my favorite classes I have taken in the past are Marine Biology, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, and Art. My major for the future is undecided, but hopefully not for long. I hope to transfer to San Diego State University following my sister who is in her junior year. I do not know what my educational career will bring me but I am excited for it and looking forward to getting through it.

We like to do a lot of things together as a family like going up to Barona Speedway where both me and my dad volunteer every other Saturday and going to the desert. I graduated from Steele Canyon High School this past June. As of currently I am taking a few classes at Cuyamaca though I am not sure as to what I will major in or choose as my career. I really enjoyed my tome being a part of color guard because I was able to meet and spend some time with some pretty amazing people that made me laugh and incorporated me into the conversations and things that were going on. In my free time you can often find me at the pier fishing. Unfortunately I don't have much free time as I work two jobs- one as a full night auditor at a Hilton hotel and the other as a part time ride operator at SeaWorld San Diego. Lately I've also become very involved with entrepreneurship, and have joined an organization to help connect startups and entrepreneurs. Also I've been helping a friend launch his own event company aimed at getting people out of their comfort zones and experiencing different genera's of music down to their roots. Anywho, I look forward to reading all of your journal entries - we've got an interesting bunch here.

  37. Hey everyone, my name is Martin Mansoor. I'm a pretty dedicated student who loves to work with computers. My major will hopefully be either computer science or engineering depending on which topic I want to master. I've loved computers since I was a kid so I think working on computers for a living isn't such a bad idea. I love hanging out with friends and relaxing at home. I have two older brothers and a little sister. Both my brothers went to Cuyamaca and my older brother actually took this class so he recommended it to me. I was born in El Cajon and haven't moved away since. I love it here and plan to stay around the neighborhood until i get old and weary. Well, that's pretty much it, Thanks for reading. Bye.

  38. Bryndon here again, I graduated from Helix Charter High School back in 2011. I was unable to go to any of the universities that I was accepted to because of financial difficulties. So, I decided to go to cuyamaca and major in physics. After my first year I found out I wasn't very good at physics, so I took a break for a semester to get my life together and came back majoring in business management. I'm still working towards my degree and hope to transfer to San Diego State University next year. However, in the mean time I'm working towards moving up the management chain in the Hospitality industry. I realized it is hard to get a management position with a degree if you don't have any management experience, so I'm gaining valuable work experience while also working towards my degree. 39. Hello, my name is Elijah.
I am 22 and attend both Cuyamaca and Grossmont while working full time at as a packaging engineer at Valley Box. Between work and school I like to hang out with friends. I try to stay active, and I enjoy sports and activities that give an adrenaline rush. I am a Christian, and God have given me a renewed joy and passion for my future and desire to follow his path. I am looking forward to this class and I hope it can help me to become more efficient in school and work.

  40. I graduated from Foothills Christian High School in 09, and I choose Cuyamaca and Grossmont to save money and avoid student loans. I have now been attending Cuyamaca for 4 years, and I plan to transfer to SDSU next fall for Mechanical Engineering. I am only attending school part time because I also work as a packaging engineer at Valley Box. The mix of working as an engineer and taking engineering classes at Cuyamaca has been a great learning experience. I am able to take what I learn at school and apply it at work, and vise versa. So far I love the engineering field, and I am excited for my career after graduation.

  41. Good Evening everyone! My Name is Maikayla Vizcarra, I am 18 years old. I've lived in San Diego all of my life, however I have family in Italy that I'll hopefully be able to visit over there for the first time. I live at home with my younger half brother, my mom, and my dad, although he is not my biological father he has raised me just the same since my mom met him when I was two. I also have a chug (pug chihuahua mix), two cats, a bunny, and an albino pac-man frog. I love all types of animals, and I have recently become vegetarian, I haven't had any meat in my diet for 8 months now. I really enjoy spending my time outside, hiking, at the beach, or out camping. I volunteer at the Cuyamaca Plant Nursery, and I highly recommend that any of you go check it out if you have yet to do so! So far everyone seems very friendly, and diverse, I look forward to sharing this online class experience with all of you :)

  42. Just recently I graduated from Steele Canyon High School. I chose to attend Cuyamaca because it is relatively close to where I live and it will save a lot of money. I wish to transfer to SDSU, once I obtain my associates degree. This class is my first ever online course, however I am taking classes on campus at cuyamaca as well. I have an interest in majoring in communications and working in public relations or something similar. However I am not entirely sure if that’s what I’d like to do yet, so I’m excited for this class because it seems as though it will help me make a firmer decision with what it is I’d like to do.

  43. Hello everyone. My name is Monica Williams and I am 17 years old. I was born and raised here in San Diego. A few of my passions are basketball, singing, and playing the piano. This past December I won a talent show at my high school, which was a great experience for me. I am currently living at home with my parents, older brother, and twin sister. I am nine minutes older. In my life school has always come first and is very important but in the rare occasion that I have free time aside from basketball practice I like to hang out with friends.

  45. I am currently still attending Monte Vista High School, but I have decided to begin taking this college course as it will be very useful when I do begin college as a full time next year. This is my first college course. I never learned the proper way to take notes and how to listen to lectures so that is one of the things I hope to get out this class. I am interested in majoring in either actuarial science or applied math. Yes I am one of those weird people who enjoys math. I really want to attend UCLA and being ranked number three in my graduating class will hopefully help me achieve this goal.

  48. My name is Lindsey Forehand, I am 20 years old. I am working on a bachelor degree in criminal justice and a masters in social work. I went away to college straight out of high school and loved the experience but also realized that being away from home wasn't for me. I am now on my second year at Cuyamaca and hoping to transfer to SDSU next fall. In my spare time I enjoy spending my time with family, going on hikes, and napping. I work Monday through Friday and am going to school part time..nap time is a huge part of my days.

  49. My educational goals... I have always wanted to major in criminal justice, so I've not come across being indecisive like a lot of college students do. I recently explored a little bit into my career options talking to people I know that have done similar things in the past. I am taking this course honestly to satisfy my requirements but I did choose it over a few other options knowing it's one I will actually value and put to use. My ultimate goal is to work with juvenile corrections and work with young females in need of some counseling and guidance. I have quite a bit of school to finish up before any of that becomes a reality for me. I look forward to taking this course.

As far as music goes I enjoy listening andI really don't have a musical preference I can listen to pretty much anything. I do like to read autobiographies, I just finished Auschwitz: A Doctor's Eyewitness Account, it was very informative and provoking. Hobbies that I engage in would be exercising, I run 10-15 miles a week and do Pilates 3 times a week. I do also volunteer, although right now it is hard to make the time because of my schedule. Oh and I just recently started cooking, I took a cooking class to support a friend and ended up liking it, so when I can I cook. In my life the most important things are my family, my partner, and accomplishing my educational goals.

  55. Hello all, My name is Dany Shaba and I am 21 years old and I have one semester left at Cuyamaca college. I am a full time student and working a full time job at the neighborhood market association. The NMA represents over 2,000 small businesses throughout CA, AZ, and NV, ive been working there for about a year now. I have a passion for cars and law enforcement. Cars have always been an interest to me ever since i was a kid, as well as law enforcement. Most of my hobbies are playing sports. I usually have a little thing with some of my friends where we play soccer every sunday at the YMCA, so that gets pretty exciting. Before i started working I loved to paintball every weekend with a bunch of my buddies. I guess things change after a bunch of responsibilities get thrown at you.

  57. I attended a rather small school called Santana High School in Santee. I graduated in 2009 and immediately started working. I started working at a landscape company taking over all the basic office work. The job paid really well at the time so I opted to continue working full time. Since I was working a 9-5 job, I was not able to go to school full time. I took a few online and night classes here and there. All the classes I needed were available when I was off work. I slowly realized this would not work if I wanted to get my degree. In July I decided to return to school full time and to put my education first. I am thankful to have all the office experience I earned but I could only get so far from my experience. A degree was very important if I ever wanted to move up in the world. This semester is my first time being a full time student. The adjustment is a drastic change but I will eventually get in the hang of it. I can’t wait till the day of graduation comes and when I can take the next step in my life.

  67. I want to graduate from SDSU to become a counselor and help other students. I would rather be a counselor at a high because it is important that graduating students are aware of what's to come. I'm also pushing for education because as of now, because 60% of jobs in America require a college degree and the percentage will rise. We all go through some trials and tribulations but I believe that God helps us throughout our lives wether we like it or not. I thank God for putting me here because everything happens for a reason

  68. Shane Dillon Introduction

Hi everyone, my name is Shane Dillon and I am currently a basketball player at Cuyamaca. I was born and raised in San Diego and have enjoyed every second of it. I have a rather large family with 3 other siblings and 2 parents who have been married over 20 years. Sports are my life and have always been my life. In high school I accepted a full scholarship to play Quarterback at the University of Colorado but decided football wasn't the path I wanted this past July. I am excited to work with everyone and I have noticed that I know some of you very well from middle school and high school so it should be an awesome class.

  69. My Educational Journey:

I graduated from Christian High School right here in El Cajon and I know most of you because I also went to Hillsdale Middle School which is right down the street from Cuyamaca. Upon graduating high school I decided to play Quarterback in the PAC12 at the University of Colorado in Boulder but after a year and a half it wasn't what I wanted to do with my life. Last July I then decided that I wanted to play basketball instead and will be attending USD in the Spring. Due to the time restrictions on transfer rules and all that I will be a student at Cuyamaca for the fall and hopefully will see most of you around campus.

For myself, my educational journey is about me finishing up my degree here at Cuyamaca College. It is a challenge to get the classes I need as well as making sure I can crash. I am continuing to push myself and work hard within this time frame. I am taking this class to help me prep for my future at Cuyamaca college. Sometimes within life we do not push ourselves. We can get unmotivated and it can make us not want to work hard in life. My goals and dreams for the future is about working hard. I want to show my children, I can do this and I did. I want to get my MBA which is my ultimate goal as I own my own company. I am currently a business owner right now and slowly trying to get my company on the ground moving forward. I do not know what my future holds for me. I am trying to keep a positive attitude and work hard day in and day out.
