Chapter 7, Improving Memory and Reading, October 7-13

I enjoyed reading about all your goals and time management strategies on the blog last week. Many of you have challenges with work, family, school and social life. Keeping your focus on your priorities, breaking the tasks into small parts and finding a reward will keep you on the right path.

For this week, read the following situations and comment on two of them using ideas from Chapter 7, Improving Memory and Reading. Have a great week.
  1. You just read the assigned chapter in economics and cannot remember what you read. It went in one ear and out the other.
  2. In your anatomy and physiology class, you are required to remember the scientific name for 100 different muscles in the body.
  3. You signed up for a philosophy class because it meets general education requirements. You are not interested in the class at all.
  4. You have a mid-term in your literature class and have to read 400 pages in one month.
  5. You must take American history to graduate from SDSU. You think that history is boring.
  6. You have been introduced to an important business contact and would like to remember his/her name.
  7. You are enrolled in an algebra class. You continually remind yourself that you have never been good at math. You don’t think that you will pass this class.
  8. You have noticed that your grandmother is becoming very forgetful. You want to do whatever is possible to keep your mind healthy as you age.
  9. Comment on any other students' posts.

If i was in this position, i would take certain steps and precautions in order to guarantee my success. For example, I would first prepare myself. Give myself a prep talk and let myself know i could do it. Then, i would skim through the four hundred pages to give myself a bit of an understand of what i will be reading. After doing this, i will assign myself to read 14 pages at a specific time. At this rate, i will finish in 28 days, giving myself a couple days to review the book again. When i read, i'll be sure to study in a quiet place, such as a library. I wont study in my bedroom, because i may fall asleep. I will be sure to focus on my goals. It would only take 15-30 minutes to read those amount of pages, which is fairly simple!

This is a very simple question. Growing up, i was always told to think positive, not negative. I didn't think much of this at the time; the only thing that came to mind was opposite magnet sides. Growing up, i've learned the importance of this. I started to realize that the more negative i thought in life, the more of a struggle i will have. So i started to think positively, and sure enough i got awesome results! So if i were in this position, i would continually tell myself that i have a chance of redemption. And i would proceed to making this class as fun as possible.

    1. Hello Giuseppe Georgees,
You are right, thinking positively will bring excellent results and I have been a witness to this first-hand. Positive energy attracts good things. I'm not going to lie, I hate math, but practice is the key in this subject. Also put really close attention to what the professor says and write all the formulas. Thinking negatively will take you nowhere because it will only make you feel down, so enjoy life and don't let any hard classes bring you down.

  3. 8. My plan for keeping my brain healthy throughout my life is to exercise daily, read, and challenge my brain. I truly believe that by being healthy and exercising daily will be very great for myself and brain because it'll make my brain healthy and potentially more smarter. Reading will definitely help my brain because it will make my brain more intelligent and know more vocabulary and become more sophisticated. By challenging my brain, all of the struggles and obstacles that I will be putting my brain in will make my brain more stronger and wiser.

    1. Hello Monique,

Within life, we are the only ones that can control ourselves with anything we do. I think many times people do not realize how critical and important this is. We have to take care of our bodies so they can work for us especially as we get older. Many times it is stress that can make some many things worse in our lives. Exercise and sometimes sleep helps to relax the brain. I always tell people it is never a good idea to pull all nighters when it comes to studying for test. We have to manage our time and do what is in our best interest.

  5. 7. I was never really great at math. But, by having a positive outlook on it, the class became more fun because if i always thought positive. I never worried so much in class because I always told myself that'll i'll do great. I will then truly believe that anything i set my mind to, i will accomplish. By having a positive mindset, I can get through all of my classes, and challenge myself with everything that wants to be thrown my way. And now i am very great at math. It has became my favorite subject.

  6. SITUATION 1: In this case, the technique I would use to help me is seeing the big picture, focusing on the main ideas and organizing the details accordingly. This would help me have a more clear understanding about what the information is about and it will help me remember. It will also help me organize the information which will enable me to access it later. I can also underline the main ideas and review them frequently. I usually do not skim the chapter before I read, but after reading this chapter, I am definitely going to start doing that. I already have developed a habit of underlining the main ideas, and that is something that has benefited me greatly in the past.

    ReplyDelete
  7. SITUATION 2: In this instance, I would apply the distributing the practice technique, which is learning small amounts of material and reviewing frequently. This is really handy when I have to learn a large number of terms; not only does it facilitate repetition, but it also turns it into an exciting game by making flash cards. I could divide the terms into smaller groups and learn them chunks at a time, instead of all of them at once. That way, I can add on to the already existing information that I have in my brain while reviewing. This is a technique that only takes a few minutes and helps me retain the information because I am learning over an extended period of time instead of in one sitting.

  8. For my first comment I have decided to write on situation number three where you have to take a philosophy course since it meets general education requirements but you are not interested in the class. I think that for this situation if I have the textbook for this class I would go ahead and look through the book. Although I would be mainly just looking at the titles of the chapters, the headings, subtitles, and any pictures. I would do this in order to see if I might actually find something that I think is interesting and can look forward to. This would be something that I would do because typically when I am not interested in a class that I am currently taking then I don't feel like trying. If I am not interested I a class then I typically don't pay attention as much or do the homework that is assigned resulting in a poor grade.

  9. As for my second comment I decided to write on situation number five and this is where you must take American history in order to graduate from SDSU but you think that history is boring. I think that the first thing that I would do or have to do is remind myself that this is the last thing that I need in order to graduate. This would help me get excited and ready for class because that means that I am almost done with school for the meantime and actually get started with my career if I haven't already. If I have that means I could get a promotion or a pay raise. Although sometimes that alone doesn't work so then I would tell myself that there can be some very interesting things in history and that just by skimming the textbook I could find a lot of interesting things. I think that in general it is a really good idea to skim through the textbook because it gives you a general idea of what will be discussed both in the textbook and in class.

  10. You just read the assigned chapter in economics and cannot remember what you read. It went in one ear and out the other.
If that is the case, then there are numerous strategies you can use to fix that. First, what you can do is go back and underline the main points, normally that will answer most of your questions. Second thing you can do is skim through it, you dont need to read the whole thing to understand what the basic points are. Sometimes the problem could be on where youre actually reading it. It would help if you would sit down in a place where there are no distractions.

  11. Situation 2: You have a mid-term in your literature class and have to read 400 pages in one month.
What you can do in this case is, instead of cramming most of the pages in your head at te end of the month you can break it down. For instance, It depends on how well of a reader one is, after you do the math on how many pages you should read each day. After splitting up how many pages you read each day, you might want to underline and highlight the main points after each page you read. This is good because just in case you forget what happens in a chapter can go back and see what you underlined or highlighted.

    1. Hello Dany,

You make some great points. One of the key and most important things is not to procrastinate. I think I have seen this happen time and time again with many people. Because you have to read 400 pages in 30 days to study for your test, it is critical to break it down into chucks daily. By doing this, one is able to really concentrate on the information and put a study guide together on everything they learned. Close to three weeks or before the midterm, a person should have about maybe ten pages in their own words of the material versus 400 to go through.

      Delete
  12. Situation 2: In this case spaced out study and practice will be affective or the technique where the words are reviewed rapidly. You can write all 100 muscles on one side and then their scientific name on the other side. For one minute a day you review the words as fast as you can. Look at the scientific side first and then look at the side with the common name of the muscle. The ones that you get wrong set aside. Then after the one minute review the ones that were missed to review them more to get a better understanding of them. Also something that is helpful is to remove the cards that you so that time isn't wasted while reviewing for the test. Spacing out the studying will give one a better chance of remembering the material on the flashcards. Also bring the flashcards with you wherever you go because it will make is so that you can study whenever there is downtime.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Situation 7: You think that you will not pass the class because you are telling yourself that you will are bad at math. The way to be successful is to have a more positive outlook on the course and your personal strengths. If you believe you won't be successful then you wont but if you believe that you can do well and succeed in the algebra class then you can. While doing the work think about your strengths and that you can complete the work. In class be active and prepared and if you fall behind seek help immediately. Have questions prepared when going to a professor's office hours because it will make it easier not only on yourself but the professor as well.

    1. Well put Monica. Confidence is said to be the greatest aphrodisiac and it can also work as a smart drug in that sense. Having confidence in your own abilities and maintaining a positive outlook is one of the greatest tools at our disposal. It is what makes us unique as human beings, allows us to strive for the seemingly impossible, and also one of the key reasons we are the best animals on earth when it comes to long distance running. It is all a mind game, and having that a sense of self-empowerment will put you keep you in first place.

  14. 8. In order to not forget things as I age what I will do is to always feed knowledge to my brain because your brain never stops taking in new things plus its good to extend your knowledge. I will eat healthy just to keep myself happy about myself, and most importantly to be healthy. I will continue to exercise four to five days a week so I don’t feel sluggish and lazy. Last is to be able to control my stress level because when someone seems to stress out over things constantly it seems to hurt their heads and not feel relaxed.

I totally agree that to keep healthy and happy you really need to do things that make yourself happy and able to feel good about yourself. I believe that if you also meditate in the morning and feel great after it you will have a wonderful day and you will be less stressed and have your mind clear and ready for the day. I think that even though the average days you need to workout to maintain a healthy body and too keep is about two days a week I think the more you do it the happier and healthy you will feel.

What I think the best thing to do is to go out and get a tutor. The reason I say this is because I hate math but in college you have to take it no matter what, so what I did was got myself a tutor and this is helping me out a lot and I actually don’t mind do math work because I can actually understand what I am learning. If that doesn’t seem to work out for you try going in a study group and work together and you can learn from one another.

    1. Hello Rawnsen,

Thank you for your post. There is nothing wrong with hiring a tutor to help you out with your math class or any other class. It is completely and very popular especially in science classes for those interested in going to medical, pharmacy, or vet school for instance. I consider a tutor such a great investment because it will be cheaper in the long run. Many times you can find students that will tutor you for $10 an hour which is really cheap and efficient especially to pass the class.

  16. 4. You have a mid-term in your literature class and have to read 400 pages in one month.

If I had a mid-term in a literature class that required me to read 400 pages in one month, I would take these 400 pages and break them down into a more doable assignment. I personally would divide the 400 pages into 21 days or three weeks and read 19 pages per day. This would give me one week to review the material and to study anything that was unfamiliar to me. By dividing up these 400 pages in small increments the assignment is not overwhelming and can easily be accomplished. This gives you time to complete it, review it and then be successful on the mid-term.

    1. Hi, Michael Haskins I do agree with you when you said I will divide those 400 pages and break them down. This is a really good for a lot of people because first you would understand better and you will not tired of reading and also you will pass the mid-term. But this is a good idea though just to break those 400 pages down I never thought of it. And once you break those pages then you would have more time to ready and do well at the mid-term. And you would also enjoy reading more once you don’t have a lot of pages.

Positive thinking is the key to success in this math class or any class that you feel is hard or a subject that you don’t like. The first step here is to go to class religiously and let the professor know your fears. Ask the professor if he/she has available office hours in which you can go to for extra help. Set up appointment times in the tutoring center to get additional help especially on days before the test. If your finances allow get a private tutor to help. While it can be expensive for this tutor you have to look at the big picture and that is that once you pass this class you can get your degree and you soon will be making more money and it will all pay for itself in the long run. Again, think positive, don’t make excuses and push yourself to succeed. If you put your mind to anything you can do it and be successful.

    1. Math is a class that is typically challenging for me, and I used to go into the class with a negative mindset dreadful for what was to come. However, once I changed my attitude and started going to math with a more positive mindset I immediately saw better results. It is best to be paitent with oneself, and if I was to realize that I was struggling I would just put in the extra time to really understand the material. To meet up with the professor, and ask extra questions, and to really put in extra time to review the material and practice the problems as I reviewed. By having a more understanding mindset of my capabilities and telling myself I could do it if I put in the effort instead of thinking I was not capable of doing it, I achieved much more in my math classes.

For this, I would take certain steps in order to be ready for this exam and read the 400 pages. I would start reading as soon as I was given the opportunity. For me to complete this amount of reading would take a ver long time. I personally read very slowly. As for the exam, I would try to study as much as possible. Maybe look over words that I know could improve my essay. To me, the most difficult part would be tacking the 400 pages of reading.

I can relate to this one. I am in a math class as of now and I am having a hard time pass the class. I have been really good at math throughout high school but in college the math classes are a lot different. My dad keeps reminding me how good I am in math and tells me I should have no problem in this class. I have a different idea in mind. I have 2 C's on my exams and have a midterm next week that I am very nervous for. This is very weird for me because math has never been an issue. The way I have been studying has been going to the math tutor center.

    1. Hello Shelby,

Getting two C's on your exam is not a bad thing at all. You should not feel discouraged in any way. Math can be very hard and it is up to us to do what we need to do to pass. One way I look at it, it is only 16 week class. By hiring a tutor, it is a great approach to do better in the class. Also with math, instructors cannot ask hard questions. In what I mean by that, we know what they will be asking. It is the same material but just different numbers. We cannot memorize or read the book. We have to practice problem after problem. I bought myself a white board when I was taking organic chemistry. It helped me to pass O. Chem cause i was using my white board 24/7. I would erase and redo problems. It might be something you might want to consider.

  20. You are enrolled in an algebra class. You continually remind yourself that you have never been good at math. You don’t think that you will pass this class

One of the worst things any of us can do when going into a class is saying we will not pass it. I have noticed this time and time again that when people feel this way, they manage to do worse in a class than they should. It helps a person to give up sooner and stop going to class. They have already established in their mindset that they are not going to pass the class so they manage to do worse. They do not give themselves a chance to try to pass the class. I have people around me telling me I got this and they know I can do it. It is amazing what a huge support system can go. It makes a big difference because you know someone is encouraging you and wants you to do good. I think when parents and others are involved within our school work, they want us to strive. They are the ones that we do not want to disappoint just like ourselves. Sometimes it is not a bad thing to higher a tutor. If one thinks about the benefits of passing the class by hiring a tutor to help them, it can go really far.

  21. You have noticed that your grandmother is becoming very forgetful. You want to do whatever is possible to keep your mind healthy as you age.

If my Grandma was starting to forget things, I would not flat out tell her. I think this is one of the worst things a person can do because they will get discouraged. For instance, because my Grandma is not young in age, she will feel like her time is over in the world. It is okay to remind her about things and show her pictures to help trigger her mind. I do not think mentioning or saying anything that she is loosing her memory is something good. It is just about telling her and reminding her about all the good things you all have done during your childhood years and as you grow up too. It happens to the best of luck just like how we can finish a class and not remember anything. If you do not take math for a year, you can forget all you learned. It is just like we have to keep our minds actively engaged in the topic, we have to do the same to help our Grandma too.

  22. Situation 1:
As we found in Chapter 7, there are a couple things to help us study better when reading, so we dont forget. The best thing to do is review just after you read. Taking down notes as you go is very helpful. Reviewing is very important because if we do not review within 20 minutes after reading something, we can lose it from our memory. For me personally in this class I would annotate every paragraph I was reading. I would try and find the most important message the paragraph is trying to tell me and write that down. After reading all of the neccessary paragraphs, I would take a short 5 min break. Then go over and review my notes I took from each paragraph multiple times. The best way to study for this test in this class is to read early on and continuously go over the notes everyday untill the test. This is idealy the best way to study because you start early enough and really get the main ideas down.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Situation 4:
Having a month to be prepared for a midterm is a good amount of time. The test is on 400 pages that has to be read in 30 days. I would make sure I made a reading schedual and stuck with it, because falling behind causes panic and stress. If I started reading on day one I would have around 14 pages a day to read for the month. Which is so much easier than leaving everything untill the last minute and having a weekend to read 400 pages. Noone wants to go through that. As I am reading my 14 pages a day I am annotating every paragraph as I go along. I will also be writing down vocab words from those 14 pages. This is the most effective way to study and is almost guarenteed a good grade on the midterm.

  24. 7. You are enrolled in an algebra class. You continually remind yourself that you have never been good at math. You don’t think that you will pass this class.

There is a 1970's documentary titled "A Class Divided" that was intended to show how segregation and stereotypes affect performance in students, however the results can be used in this scenario as well, ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bf0zfMl5KSA ) basically white students were told one day that blue eyed people were smarter than brown eyed people and going through flashcards that day reflected what they were told. However then next day they were told yesterdays information was wrong and that brown eyed people are really smarter than blue eyed people, and again the flashcard drills reflected what they were told. It wasn't the fact that any of them were really smarter or dumber so to say, but the fact that they thoroughly believed they were dumber and how it affected their performance. Having lack of confidence in yourself creates a similar psychological affect. I personally know this because I used to believe that I was horrible at math. In fact I didn't pass Algebra 1 until the 3rd try. However I gained some self confidence in my math skills and have now completed the calculus series. It all had to do with my state of mind, and simply believing that I was not actually bad at it.

    1. That is a very interesting study. I have hear of a similar study where they told the teacher which students would be good students, which ones were average, and which ones were below average. The students were put into the groups randomly, and did not know about the study. The students ended up living up to their groups, just because of the teachers perspective of the students.

  25. 2. In your anatomy and physiology class, you are required to remember the scientific name for 100 different muscles in the body.

this has actually happen to me and it was for a big test last year in my class. my teacher had my class maybe not a hundred but about 80 muscles in the body and the way that I learned them was that I made a song. I took a beat to a song called Hey LA by my friend Ryan Beatty. he helped me redo the lyrics to find the terms into a song and then we sat a sang the song and recorded it and I was able to play it over and over till I memorized it. this is a very helpful memorization technique because most people know songs because they come with a beat and are catchy. another way that also helped me with memorizing all the terms is I made flashcards on the Monday we got the assignment and then studied for about ten minutes everyday once in the morning and once at night. I kept it very short study times so my mind doesn't wander because when I try to focus on things for to long I start to get bored and wander. these are the two main things that help me memorizer stuff that is important.

I have to do stats next semester and I am worried but I believe in myself that I can do any math. Practice is the key in math. 27. You have a mid-term in your literature class and have to read 400 pages in one month.
If you read about 30 pages a day , the book would be finished in 2 weeks. That way you would have 2 extra weeks to review what you read and go back and summarize the main points of the book or plot.

You must take American history to graduate from SDSU. You think that history is boring.
A way to make a history class un-boring and fun to you is to picture the material you are reading about in your head. Example an american history class might talk about the civil war. While you are reading about the civil war picture the battle going on in your or try to think what it would feel like to be a person during that time.

You have been introduced to an important business contact and would like to remember his/her name.
A way to remember this business contacts name would be to ask him/her to repeat it. When you repsone to them use their name is a sentence such as How are you, Bob. And lastly repeat their name in your head while you are looking at them to connect the name to the face.

  28. 1.You just read the assigned chapter in economics and cannot remember what you read. It went in one ear and out the other.

This is something that happened often to me last year. Personally the best option would be reading it first, even if it does go through one year and out the other, than I would read it again taking notes. With taking notes, you can look at the main points and then when preparing for a test instead of reading the chapter several more times you can look at your notes and maybe review the chapter once. Another way to help your memory through this problem is starting early. With this you can learn it early and not have to wait until the last minute to study. This would just be frustrating and make you stressful. There are many ways that can help a person like this with this issue. It may be hard to learn the information, but it is not impossible.

This would be very difficult for someone like me who does not enjoy reading. For someone like this, first they should research what the story is about to try to get yourself interested in the story. Then I would have to make a schedule since I truly have waited to the last few days before a book report was due. I would try to spread the book out using the whole month so I would be able to complete it. I would read 100 pages a week, around 15 pages a day. During this time I would make a list of the characters and important events. I would also try to think about the story and the ways it could end.

Because even though I don’t like reading then I would work really hard to read even if I don’t like too. But I will read every day and study and I would go to the library every day to get help with everything that I don’t understand.

If this was something I had to do for a class I would sit and think which technique would be best for this type of assignment. I have always been good with lists like this and making terms or sentences that have the first letter of the words in them. I would start early and each day sit down and try to remember them 5 or 7 at a time and master the new list each day adding on to what I learned the previous day. I would continue this until I was confident and could recite all of the muscles and show where they were located.

  34. You are enrolled in an algebra class. You continually remind yourself that you have never been good at math. You don’t think that you will pass this class.

This is something that is very realistic for me and I have always struggled quite a bit in math. If this happened to me in college I would be very discouraged at first but I know the best thing to do would be to push through and complete the course. I would be constantly reminding myself that I am capable as long as I put my mind to it. Going to class I would have to go with the intention of retaining the information I read and taking notes so that I could go back and review the information to make sure it stays with me.

  35. math is not a easy class for every student Lindsey. i agree with you.it is a good idea to think positively about the class.you won't do good if you start off doubting your ability to pass the class.it wasn't my best class either but when you get help it makes you more eager to learn and do well in the class.studying the math notes is best also so you will memorize the steps for math.

  36. If you are in an algebra class that will be difficult to pass, you must first develop a positive attitude about the class. Yes it will probably be hard, but it is not impossible with the right amount of effort. You must decide that you are going to pass the class, and willing to do whatever it takes. Attend every class, and do all the homework. Study your notes after class, and make sure you get help on anything you don't understand. Before the exam, make sure everything is fresh in your mind and that you understand it. If I need to remember equations, I usually look them over right before the test, then as soon as I get the test, I write them on the first page.

  37. You have noticed that your grandmother is becoming very forgetful. You want to do whatever is possible to keep your mind healthy as you age.
In order to keep my mind healthy as I age, I will watch what it is that I put into my body, especially foods. I will keep in mind that it is good to include proteins. I will also make sure to exercise or find some sort of excercises that i'm capable of doing as I grow older, and try to go on at least one walk/jog a day. Also I will keep my mind captivated by reading challenging material, and writing poetry. It would also be a good thing to keep up on current events and discuss them with others and engage in conversations with interesting people.

  38. 4. You have to read 400+ pages in one month.

If I had this task the first thing that I would do is to tell myself that I can accomplish the task. Confidence is key in these situations. The next thing that I would do is skim the pages so that I can gain a better grasp of the material. Finally I would try to assign myself a certain amount of pages each day so that by the 27-29 day of the month I will have finished the book and have ample time to review. After dedicating myself to this task I will try to set an alarm on my phone that reminds me of my goals and to get there I must accomplish my task.

  39. 1. Can't remember what I just read in my textbook for the weekly chapter

This is something that happens to me frequently. I often find myself trying to finish the chapter as soon as possible and then when I do finish and look back on what I read I actually have no clue. To prevent situations like this from happening in the future I try to use tools like a highlighter to underline key points and make sure I go back and find the main point of each paragraph so that I know the overall message of the chapter at the end.

  40. In your anatomy and physiology class, you are required to remember the scientific name for 100 different muscles in the body.
This is something I would struggle with for sure. I always have trouble with memorization when it comes to tests. What I would do to improve this is to spread out my time and study 10 parts a day a couple weeks before the exam so I can not just memorize them, but learn them. There is a big difference between the two. I would want to get them stuck in my head and have it be 2nd nature by the time the test comes along.

  41. You have a mid-term in your literature class and have to read 400 pages in one month.
This is another situation where you must use time management, which is something I would like to improve on. Instead of leaving the 400 pages for the last week read maybe 20 pages a day and make the assignment easier on yourself. If you leave the assignment until the last couple of weeks it becomes reading 50 pages a day and that becomes very difficult. If you manage your time right in any situation, not just reading, it makes your life a whole lot easier.
