Chapter 6, Managing Time and Money, Sept. 30-Oct. 6

This new chapter is about time management and is one of the most powerful chapters in the text. For this week's discussion, share one of your lifetime goals and describe the time management techniques you will use to accomplish this goal. If there are obstacles in the way, how will you deal with them?

For your second post, read another student's post and make a comment about it. Sometimes it is helpful to read about other students' goals and how they are managing to accomplish them. The first post can be longer and the second one can be shorter.

I will share with you one of my lifetime goals and how I used the ideas in this chapter to accomplish it. My lifetime goal was to write a book on how to be successful in college because I struggled as a young college student and learned how to be successful. Then I taught the topic for 30 years. I had some time off from work and set as my goal to write the text. I found myself distracted by things around the home. I would get up in the morning and exercise, make myself a nice breakfast, read the paper and do a few household chores. Soon the day was gone and I had not accomplished my goal. I decided to work on my goal first and then reward myself with exercise and other things that I wanted to do. It was just a matter of rearranging my tasks. I still found it difficult to get started. I used the idea of a leading task. I would just sit at the computer, fill my head with ideas and start to write. Then I would refine the writing the next day. Within 6 months I had the first draft of the text written. Today it is used in about 60 colleges across the country. The CollegeScope material is my latest project.

Ok, I have shared one of my goals and how I accomplished it. Now it is your turn. Tell about something you accomplished in the past or something you hope to accomplish in the future. See if you can use some of the time management ideas in the text.

  1. One of my lifetime goals includes opening my own business, expanding, and franchising. This has been my #1 goal for the past couple of years now. This goal is the base of all my other goals. Like a growing tree throughout my lifetime. Along the way, i plan on branching out and accomplishing many other goals i have.Of course, this goal is not the simplest of tasks, but with God, dedication and perseverance, i have complete confidence in myself. It is true when they say time is money. We all have the same 24 hours as icons such as Walt Disney, Warren Buffett, and Steve Jobs. I plan on using my time in an effective manner by cutting of all procrastination in my life and focusing on what really matters, If i have obstacles along the way, i wont mind. Obstacles are bound to happen in anyone's life. Learning how to manage them could be difficult, but i've learned how to approach all of my obstacles with a smile and a hurdle.

    1. I think that is an excellent goal to strive for. It sounds like you are very determined and I think that everyone should be in order to achieve their goals. Also it sounds like once distractions come around you've already learned how to deal with them which is great. I am still struggling to deal with my distractions. I think that once you get to opening your own business that you will do really well and be able to go very far with it.

    2. Hello Giuseppe,

Having your own business is something great that you are interested in pursing and doing. I know many people that want to do this because life is getting harder. It is not easy to depend on one job especially since so many places are laying off employees. One day you have a job and another day you can be let go. Then what does a person do? Owning a business takes a lot work and dedication. It is about pushing yourself and having people around you that want you to do this too. You got it and I can see you being successful. Do not give up and continue to try.

    3. You sound like a very driven individual. I myself am an entrepreneur so I can totally relate. There are a bunch of hurdles that will come along the way- but as long as you're sharp, determined, and take action then you'll make it. Hopefully someday we'll both see eachother at the top and take a toast to the days we were in counseling 120 together.

    4. I think this is a really good career you’re your thinking of Giuseppe Georgees I hope you reach your dream and open your own business someday. And also I liked how you said you would complete with the god and dedication with your dream. But I hope someday you would reach and achieve your dream and become a guy who opens his own business so keep up the good work and hope to achieve your dream one day.

  2. Dear Mrs Fralick.
Your goal is very interesting and a great model to follow for many people. A lot of children struggle through college and get very side-tracked. But it is great you pulled yourself out of that slump and faced reality.Putting your goal before your physical health really shows how dedicated you were to accomplishing that goal. One of my goals in life is to also write a book. Not necessarily a college textbook though. i would love to hear more about your process and how you went about publishing, to give me a general idea of the work involved!

  3. One of my lifetime goals is to become a writer. I have loved reading since I was very young. When I started trying to figure out what I wanted to as a career I started thinking that it would be really cool to write my own book and try to get it published. Even though everyone else thought that it was really cool and a great idea. Everyone also agreed and thought that it was smart when I told them that before I was going to try and do that I would first get another satisfying career and ensure financial security before attempting to write my own book.

    1. I think you have a very cool goal. If this is something you love and are passionate about I always think that's something worth striving for! It is a good idea to become financially stable before exploring that adventure I think. I dont think it's ever a bad idea to be safe and careful first before starting something you're unsure about. Happiness is always the most important factor in deciding your lifetime career. I have always loved writing about experiences in my life, writing is such a great outlet for everything!

    2. Hi Brittany! It is so great meeting you! I am also a writer and one of my lifetime goals is also to write literature. I always love meeting other fellow writers. :) I think that it is a good idea to look for a career that will provide you with a steady income while you pursue your dream of being writer. Have you also considered to spend some time writing every week, even if it is just a small amount a week? Maybe you could start a blog or keep archives on your computer. Trust me, they will definitely come in handy later. You are going to be an amazing author.

    3. I really enjoy when people say they want to become a writer. Writing is a lot more emotional and involved than many other careers. Most people don't realize how deep of a career it is. The author's mind is written down on paper, and to be able to know about what they are thinking and how they are thinking is phenomenal. I wish you luck in your goal. Now of course, financial security is always good, but if thats something you really want to do, dont wait until you're out of your prime, because then you won't want to do it later. Dont make it a Plan A and B situation, make it a Plan A-1 and A-2 situation.

    4. Hi Brittany! I really think that you will be great at what you do. I never really come across students that want to become a writer, which is why I really love your goal. It is very important to get a stable job at first. Maybe it'll be more helpful in the end. You may come across many positive and negatives things in your life that you can write a book on. I know that you will be very successful.

    5. I find it interesting that many of my students this semester are interested in writing which is what I do full time now that I am retired. The secret is to write a little almost every day. Stephen King writes 1500 words a day. He started off as an English teacher.

    6. I like how you plan to be set finically before becoming a writer. i think that it is great that you like to write and that you want to write a book! I enjoy reading, but i am not much of a writer. Maybe one day when you have a book published i will be able to read it!

  4. One of my lifetime goals is to graduate with a bachelors degree in criminal justice and a masters degree in social work. I know this is going to take a lot of work and focus on my school work. I think my time management will be the most important thing I need to work on in order to reach my goal. Studying for me is time consuming and hard for me to balance all the things going on in my life. If there is an obstacle I guess I would just try to find a way around it and modify my plan to continue my path towards my goal.

    1. I like your goal because even though you chose something hard you seem like you are determined and will do what it takes in order to accomplish it. Just like any other goal in life its not going to be easy at first but with hard work and dedication you will be able to do it as long as you keep your head up and never give up.

    2. Hello Lindsey,

A Master's degree in social work is such an incredible degree. It does involve a lot of work and dedication since this cannot be done online. I would just make sure when you are looking at doing this for your master's degree you find out specifically what is required for California to become a social worker. I had a friend that went to an online school for social work but it did not mean anything because her state did not accept it. Keep up your great work and continue to balance things. i think it is important to have fun and work hard. By doing this, you will be able to be successful in the world. I wish you the best of luck.

  5. One of my lifetime goals and my most important goal is to always stay close with family. The reason why this is the most important goal to me is because family is family and they are the ones that will always be there for you when you are down and need help. I learned this from growing up in a large loving and caring family. My family has taught me to always help each other even if they don’t need any help. Even though you may fight with family members you can always seem to find a way to resolve the problem and get back to normal things. Now that I live in San Diego coming all the way from Sacramento keeps me far apart from them but I communicate with them on a daily basis just to see how things are going.

    1. This is a wonderful goal to have. I agree with you that family is very important and they are always there for you no matter what. I love my family very much and we are very close and we do so much together. We have traveled to many destinations over the years and have some great memories of these vacations. One of the things that we still do as a family is have dinner together almost every night. This gives us an opportunity to talk to each other and stay connected. It is amazing to me how many people tell me that they are not close with their parents or siblings. I can't even imagine not being there for my family or they not being here for me. I believe that is one of the reasons I really don't have a desire to go away to college and that I want to stay here locally in San Diego because if I go away I will miss all the things we do together. I am glad for you that your family is only in Sacramento, while that is a distance it is still in the state and it makes it easy for you to go home or for them to come and visit. Always remain close to your family because they are special people.

    2. I can relate to your goal about trying to stay close to your family. I too grew up in a close and loving family. We basically do everything together and I know when things get hard I can always count on my family to be there for me. This is currently one of the hardest things in my life right now. My dream college is about two hours away and the next college that I want to attend is 8 hours away from home. While I would love to go to these colleges it is a really hard for me because I know I am going to be home sick and miss my family. I tell my parents everyday that I am going to skype them every night that I am away at college. I want to stay in San Diego to be with my family but I don't want to give up going to the colleges of my dreams. But anyways your goal is a really great goal to have.

    3. Hello Rawnsen,

You make a very valid and great point. It is critical to be close to your family. I have known many people that have children at a young age and the ones that are still successful in life are the ones that have family support. You need your family to be with you especially if something goes wrong. I know more children especially in San Diego move out of their parents house and move back in because it is cheaper than trying to pay $500-$1000 for an apartment. Communication is the key. Many times people forget to speak to their family which is not a good thing. My mom calls me everyday after work and I try to visit her about 5 days a week just to say hi.

    4. i think this is a really great goal to have. i think that it is always good to have the people who will always be behind you. they are very important and to have someone who will always love you behind your dreams is always well because you always have someone cheering for you. i know that being close to family is everything. i was adopted and i gave up on being apart of family and know that i am with a family that loves me so much i realize how they are always behind me and its the most important thing i have. keep loving them and wanting them in your life.

  6. For this week’s blog I am going to move away from a professional career goal and share a personal goal I am going to aim for. I throw the discus for my high school team and being able to throw the discus well can get me a scholarship for college. I don’t need that scholarship because my tuition is free since my father is retired military and I can attend any Community College, State or UC school for free. I want to do this for a personal goal and achievement, one that will make me feel proud of my accomplishment. I want to be able to break my school record this year and want to be acknowledged for it in the sports section of the newspaper. I presently can throw in the 140’s, however I have not thrown the discus in several months because I stopped when football started. I plan to start throwing again immediately after football season to get ready for the track/field season. I already have a coach to help me and between the end of football season and the start of track season I will have about 16 weeks to improve on my score. I would like to hit the 180s by CIF finals so that I can go to state. I plan to throw every day and on the weekends. My friend said that he will go out with me and throw when football ends. I can also rely on my parents and sisters to go out with me on the weekend and help retrieve the discs as I throw them. I have already asked my parents to get me some 2 kg rubber discs to practice with. 2 kgs is college weight so it is a little heavier than required in high school but that will only make me better. I hope to increase my distance by 10 feet every three to four weeks, which will be my short term goal so that I will be able to reach my 180 mark by CIF playoffs. I realize there will be obstacles that get in the way, such as bad weather (preventing me from practicing), injury or increased homework but I am going to go at least one hour each day and throw. I am not going to procrastinate and I will ask my parents to help me reach this goal and push me every day to do it. Ultimately I know that I am in control and the only one that can accomplish this goal and I am going to work very hard at trying to reach this goal.

    1. That is a very awesome goal that you wish to achieve, and it is something that many people would not aim to do. It is very fascinating to know that you are willing to still try and put a lot of effort into getting a scholarship, when you can go to school for free anyways. That is very intriguing and inspiring because you are willing to work hard, when in reality you don’t have to. Good for you, and keep up the good work!

  7. One of my lifetime goals is to graduate from a UC, hopefully UCLA, with a bachelors degree in actuarial science and obtain my license to be a practicing actuary. There are many ways I can manage my time to make this goal a reality. First every night I set aside at least 15 minutes to start the application process of applying to UC schools. This includes working on my personal statement and looking for scholarships so that I do not leave a financial burden on my parents while I am in college. Next year when I do get into college I plan on making a loose schedule of how I will manage my time so that I can balance going to school, working a part time job, and spending time with family and friends. I will use these leisure activities as rewards that I can obtain when I am done studying or completing assignments for class. Right now in high school, my friends and I have lunch every Friday at our favorite restaurant but the catch is we have to have completed all of our school work for the week. I can use the same principal of this weekly gathering while in college as a motivation throughout the week as well. If I can stick to these time management skills, I believe that I can one day obtain my goal.

    1. Hello Monica,

Thank you for your post. UCSD is an amazing school to attend. It is up to you to always push yourself and do what you need to do. UCSD is a very tough school so just make sure this semester just like the previous semesters, you focus on keeping your grades at As and Bs. Do not give up if you do not get in the first time you try. It is okay and always try again. Many times people will give up if they get rejected once and this is not a good way to look at things. By having a schedule it will give you an idea of what you need to do and when you need to accomplish it. Keep up your hard work and dedication. I know you got this.

  8. My ultimate goal is to get my degree. I have a passion for earning my bachelor's degree if not my Master's Degree. It is weird because I always want to see myself writing Julio Franco, MBA. This is a goal of mine and this is something that I wish for. Time management is a key tool when it comes to reaching any of our goals and I think for myself, I found what works for me. I need to write down what I want to accomplish each day. For instance, in order to get my MBA, I need to get my associates then I need to get my bachelor's degree. There is funding available for me through financial aid which is not the problem. It is about me doing what I need to do to be successful in school. I need to push myself and remember what to finish when. For instance, I think most of you know this, I got behind on all of my classes in the beginning of the semester. I blame this because of bad time management skills. I was spending a lot of time trying to figure out what I need to do without writing everything down. Now, I create myself this sheet of paper daily and once on Friday for the weekend on everything I need to do for school and my personal life. By doing this, I am able to remember all of my assignments without letting anything slip through the cracks and not doing it. There is always going to be obstacles because life manages to put things in the way of our success. For instance, there is going to be parties, there is going to be events I want to attend including things that were unplanned for like deaths and other hard things in the world. By being ahead on my school work, I am able to be a little more prepared for everything. It is also helpful to have someone to push me and always remind me why I am doing this. It is just like i need to remind myself.

    1. That is a great goal that you are so focused on getting a degree! Do you know where you want to go after cuyamaca? What do you want to get your degree in? I think we share a few similarities with school! I too get behind in my classes because of poor time management. It is really important to keep reminding yourself how important school is and the faster you get your classes done the quicker youre out of school. I always remind myself that it is a lot less stressful when I get my studying and projects done early, so I dont have to worry about it last minute. Good luck with school!

  9. My goal is to become a serial Entrepreneur. Last weekend I was in a contest sponsored by Google for Entrepreneurs. There were around 100 Entrepreneurs and we were given 48 hours to come up with an idea, create a team, and form a startup. When it came time to announce first place and my team had not been called we were both worried and excited. The judges announced the first place team and we could hardly contain ourselves when our name was called. Since then we all decided to officially move forward with our idea, further develop our business model, analyze financials, and seek funding. This is the second startup i'm working with and the first one i'm co-founding. Reaching goals can only be done by taking action, so I try and go where others will not and aim for the moonshot ideas. I've took action in becoming well networked among startups, gaining a great mentor who is very successful, and providing energy to the teams I work with. I'm on track to reaching my goal - when I found one more startup i'll officially be considered a "serial" entrepreneur.

Since your group was able to win the contest, I'm sure your idea will turn out to be a big success. Best of luck on becoming a serial entrepreneur and bringing your group's idea into reality.

  10. my biggest life time goal Is to be on the board of directors for a foundation called Love 146 it is an organization that try's to stop Human and Sex trafficking in not only the USA but in other countries around the world. I know that there will be many obstacles like how I will even be apart of the organization or how to become so high in the board. I have wanted this for a long time and I will start at the bottom with week to week volunteer work till I get to go on trips and I try to stop it and I would also like to become way more involved after I have a college degree and that way i have more experience in my life. i think that i just have to be able to keep going and not to give up, i have to remember that not only am i doing this for me but i am doing it for all the other people who the organization is helping. doing this will help me know that when i want something I am going to get it if I put all my effort into it. this is not just an imagination it is a want.

  11. One of my lifetime goals is to be a high end executive in the law enforcement field. Some time management techniques i will be going to use is, having a set schedule for my everyday life, versus waking up every morning not knowing what I will be doing. Also, I will be avoiding things that just waste time in general when I could be doing something productive. I will not let anything stop me, even when there are going to be numerous obstacles in my way, I will always have my mind on my life time goal and will not let anything stop me. I will always think about what I love to do and why I am doing it, so that nothing will let me down.

  12. Hi everyone! One of my lifetime goals is to be an author of many books, genres ranging from children's novels to inspirational books. Ever since I was young, I have always enjoyed writing and coming up with stories. I am also a deep thinker with a lot of ideas that I want to get out there in the world. A time management technique that I will use to accomplish my goal is keeping a schedule. I am a visual person, and having a schedule that allows me to see where my free time is really helps me. I will also use rewards to motivate myself to focus on doing the work. For example, I can reward myself with a little Facebook, a movie, or some social time with friends immediately after I get my work done. Another technique I can use is to allot a specific time during the day to do my writing. That way, I can avoid distractions. When there are obstacles in the way, I will deal with them by not making any excuses or freaking out, but by positively approaching the obstacle and finding a solution. If I have to give up a few things for a little while in order to accomplish what I want, it is going to be worth it.

  13. One of my goals is to be a business owner. I am currently studying mechanical engineering and working full time for a small company in Santee. I have been blessed to have a lot of experience with business ever since I was young. My dad owns his own small construction company, and I worked for him several years before getting my current job. My mom was also self employed and had a small floral business for many year where she would make the flowers for weddings. She has since sold the business so that she can write books, which she is self publishing. Since I was young I have always had a desire to own my own business one day. My boss knows about my desire to own a business so he has been teaching me a lot about how the business runs. To meet this goal, I am constantly learning as much as I can, I am saving money to invest later, and I am always thinking and keeping a list of business opportunities. My desire is that I could use the business to reach out to people in need. For example, I would love to be able to build schools or bring fresh water to people in third world countries.

I have always been one to work better under pressure and in critical environments. Sooo with that being said I am a bit of a procrastinator when it comes to doing my homework. I wait till the last minuet because I feel like I am more focused when I do, but I understand that it isn’t an ideal way to learn. I know I’m not fully applying myself when I do it. I am going to work on doing homework earlier in the week little by little, focusing on a class each day.

  21. I believe having a life time goal is a bit overrated and too wishful for me. Don't get me wrong it is very good to set goals for yourself, but I believe in setting goals on a day to day basis because you do not know what tomorrow has to offer. I have many goals that I wish to achieve through out my life, but there is nothing I or anyone else can do to achieve those goals now. Large goals like that take many smaller goals to achieve that one big goal, and those small goals need to be set by us at the start of our days, or weeks. The best way to successfully achieve goals in my opinion is by setting a certain standard for yourself and finding those goals and checking them off of your list day by day. Live and achieve for today, and you will have a better tomorrow. "Do something today that your future self will thank you for." One of my favorite quotes.

  22. Shane Dillon Lifetime Goal

One of my lifetime goals is to be an example to young athletes that no matter where you come from you can still get to where you want to be in life. I want to make my life out to be as best as an example to my kids as well as other kids when I grow older about the way in which to handle yourself to be successful in terms of athletics. The values in which to hold and the way you present yourself to the public on and off the field. I will achieve this goal by being the best person I can be day in and day out. If I can succeed in doing this I feel I will have set a great example on how a young athlete should act and will be very proud to say that.

    1. Athletics really help you become the best person you can be because in athletics you are exposed to reality, you really see how is better than you and you realize your true character, for me athletics have made me see my weakness and my strength and has allowed me to grasp what I really need to work on in my life and has giving me a clear mind and an improved sense of purpose, all in all I think everyone would do a sport at some point because sports can help you grow as a person inside and outside.

  23. My personal lifetime goal is to simply be successful. This doesnt sound like a big deal, but to me it really is. Growing up I watched my mom be very successful, providing a good life for herself and I. She worked really hard to get her degree and get a great job. As for my friends and their parents, most of them didnt get degrees and are really struggling everyday. My best friend for example doesnt want to go to college and wants to be dependent on her boyfriend. I am completely the opposite and it is really important to me to stay true to my goals. I want to be able to get my degree, get my dream job, have a family and live happily and comfortably. In order to accomplish this important goal of mine, I will really need to do well in school to get my degree. Time management is my biggest struggle and will really take a lot of work to get better at it. I need to open up more study hours, and actually sit down and study without multitasking. I really believe I am on the right track and I can wait to see what happens in these next few years.

  24. My dream is to make something of my martial arts whether it is competing or teaching or anything in between that allows me to sustain myself, it’s been a dream of mine since I started training. Accomplishing this goal will be hard due to the fact that there is a 100% chance of me getting injured along the way and there are thousands of other people who are trying to make that dream come true too and they will break your arm just for a chance of making their wish a reality. There are a lot of road blocks when going down this road such as injuries and skin infections something that everyone will have to go through if you train any combat sport and they can be anything from bending your finger the wrong way to tearing your ACL and not even step of the mat for at least 9 months. I have dealed with this by always being aware of what is going on, and if I do get a minor injury I will still train with that injury but find ways to work around it. This dream is a little unconventional but I do not care about how unlikely it is or how hard or long the journey may be, because above anything else I want to look back and fail or succeed I knew I gave my all and trying to make it work.

  25. My lifetime goal is to be successful and happy. This may not seem like a very hard goal to achieve but I feel like it is a reasonable goal to aim for. Growing up I watched my mom and dad going to work monday-friday and coming home always stressed. Yes they were able to provide for my brother and I but I hope to be more happy with my job. I want to go to work everyday knowing I will have a good day. I know every day cant be "fun" but I hope to never hate my work place. I think by setting my goals of being successful and happy I will be able to be where I want to in life.

  26. I'm an outdoorsy person, and I love to be in different natural settings. Over my lifetime I hope to travel, to learn about many different cultures, explore natural parts of the world, and try all sorts of different food. So I strive for a job in which I can get paid to travel. I'm extremely comfortable talking in front of groups of people, and giving public speeches. So I figured, I would get a job in something like public relations or international affairs. That way I could use something that I'm good at as an excuse to travel. As of right now, I'm taking general ed classes required for a major in communications, and once completed I hope to transfer with my associates to SDSU & finish up there. I'm also taking on different internships to get work experience.

  27. One of my important lifetime goals is to open up many clothing businesses of my own. The first step in accomplishing this goal is getting the education that will be needed and by having the experience that will be beneficial for this career. I plan on achieving this goal by getting the education that I will need, which is why I want to continue my education in Business Administration with an emphasis on Management. Time is money. And I plan on not procrastinating. I plan on spending as much time on what I have to do before I start my career.

  28. Share one of your lifetime goals and describe the time management techniques you will use to accomplish this goal. If there are obstacles in the way, how will you deal with them?
One of my lifetime goals is to get a degree and get a good paying job to support my future family. I am still undecided on my major, but i am leaning towards business management mostly because most of my family has done this and have become successful with it. Some obstacles that might get in the way is laziness and not going all out in my classes. I started out slow this semester, but was able to pick it up towards the end and I plan to continue to improve in my school work in my time during college.
